Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the new era at their football club following the appointment of Marco Silva as the new Toffees manager last month.
The 40-year-old replaces Sam Allardyce in the Goodison Park hotseat after the Englishman was relieved of his duties at the end of last season, this all despite leading the Merseysiders to an eighth place finish in the Premier League. Nonetheless, the Toffees now have their man and as such there is much optimism among our resident Evertonians that the Portuguese can be the man to take the club into top six contention this time round.
However, for that to happen, it’s clear that reinforcements are needed during the summer, which is why Toffees supporters are likely to be interested by recent reports linking their club with a move for Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson.
And with Boro themselves reportedly keen on Muhamed Besic and Ramiro Funes Mori, those two Everton stars out and £9 million-rated ace Gibson (as per Transfermarkt) in is a possible deal that would without doubt represent great business by the Toffees.
Ultimately, midfielder Besic spent the second half of last season on loan at the Riverside Stadium to underline his lowly position in the pecking order at Goodison Park, and while a new manager always brings about the possibility of being dragged back in from the cold, it seems unlikely to happen for the Bosnia and Herzegovina international.
And with centre back Funes Mori missing the vast majority of last season due to injury, it remains to be seen if he can be the reliable and dependable defender Everton are so desperately in need of after a poor campaign at the back last term.
Yet he has already been linked with a move away this summer to suggest that maybe he isn’t in Silva’s plans, and with Boro reportedly keen on the duo to help bolster their squad for the 2018/19 Championship campaign, Everton will surely seek to strike a deal for Gibson as a result.
The Englishman has certainly proven his defensive capabilities in recent seasons, not least in Boro’s disastrous campaign in the Premier League back in 2016/17, as although Aitor Karanka’s side lost their top-flight status, they finished the season with the best defensive record of any team that finished in the bottom half of the division.
And 25-year-old Gibson certainly played his part in that, to the point that he was called up by Gareth Southgate to the England squad for friendlies back in March 2017, although he didn’t feature for the Three Lions.
Nonetheless, it’s clear that the centre back has genuine Premier League pedigree and could go some way to helping Silva in his quest to tighten up the Everton backline. And with the young duo of Michael Keane and Mason Holgate at the club, Gibson’s arrival would lay the foundations for the long-term as well.
And with the Toffees reportedly keen on Gibson, and with Boro seemingly eyeing the Everton duo of Besic and Funes Mori, a possible deal could well be in the offing – a deal that would represent great business by the Merseyside outfit.
