It’s hard to find a balance between promoting youth and bringing in quality talent. If Vincenzo Grifo arrives at Goodison Park, the balance would be tipped out of home-grown Ademola Lookman’s favour.
TEAMtalk have linked the Toffees with the Italian winger who’s played 16 times this season, contributing an impressive four goals and six assists. He’s 25-years-old and looks ready to make the step up from SC Freiburg to the Premier League.
But at what cost?
Everton have a bright future planned, with a new stadium on the way and money to spend, but they also have a wealth of talent coming through the ranks. One of those talents is quite clearly Ademola Lookman, who impressed at Red Bull Leipzig last season. He did what he was asked to do on loan, hugely impressing out in Germany and returned surely expecting long-term chance in the side.
The supporters reading this would also have been begging to see him more involved, considering the rapid rise of the England youth generation across the continent in the last few months. Frustrating, right?
Indeed, he’s made 16 appearances this season and has looked hit-and-miss, just like the rest of the squad. Still, the former Charlton youngster is only 21 and to give up on him this early would be stupid on the club’s part. The trust simply needs to be there.
The issue with this move is the player coming in isn’t a world-class signing that Lookman would expect to be overtaken by. It’s a £5.4m-rated (as per Transfermarkt) winger with no experience in the league so it’s disheartening for a player with such potential, and it might ultimately lead to him giving up on Everton.
Yes, Everton need to invest, but they either need to have faith in their youth or buy world-class talent, not bring in players who aren’t proven at the highest level either.
