“We’re £30m-40m behind Tottenham” – Chief discusses Everton transfer plans

Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern can’t stop talking about the coming summer transfer window.

Ronald Koeman has clearly moved Everton in the right direction since taking the managerial hot seat from Roberto Martinez last summer, with his seventh-placed Toffees looking to close in on the Premier League’s top six as we reach the business end of the campaign.

But Everton fans in the Tavern reckon the team is still one transfer window away from being able to truly compete for a top four finish and the consequential Champions League qualification. Although the Goodison Park outfit have played some fine football at times this term, they’ve lacked consistency throughout the campaign.

However, the club’s chief executive Robert Elstone has promised a huge summer ahead for the Merseysiders, following Farhad Moshiri’s investment in the club last year, which should see Everton spend to force themselves into the Premier League’s elite.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo, he said; “It’s really important big summer for us and the club will continue to make big investments, the squad will continue to grow and improve and it will be a very busy and exciting summer for Everton fans.

“Looking back at the last summer transfer window, the transfer window changed enormously. Transfer fees went through the roof and wages went through the roof and I think more of the same will happen.

“What we’ve got to do is operate in that window as we always have done, looking out for best value and being as good as we can in terms of negotiating and getting the best bang for our buck in that sense.”

He continued; “The gap between Everton in seventh and some of the clubs above us who have been playing in the Champions League regularly is absolutely enormous.

“We’re £30-40million behind Tottenham in terms of wage bill, we’re about a third of what some of the other teams above us are behind and about a quarter of Manchester City and Chelsea. That gap is absolutely enormous but there’s a belief within the club that it’s not just about money.”
