Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern are completely divided over how Romelu Lukaku has treated the club in recent weeks.
Agent Mino Raiola previously suggested the free-scoring striker had “99.9 per cent” agreed terms on a new contract at Goodison Park, but earlier this month Lukaku informed the club’s hierarchy that he has no intention of signing a new deal.
Those in the Tavern reckon Everton’s questionable ambitions are at the crux of the issue. Although Farhad Moshiri appears prepared to provide the funds to take the club forward, Everton are still some way from challenging for a Champions League spot – let alone the Premier League title.
They’ve finished in the bottom half for two straight seasons and although there has been significant improvement under Ronald Koeman, the Belgium international still stands head and shoulders above the rest of the squad, currently top of the Premier League’s scoring charts.
However, former Everton striker Tony Cottee, who scored 99 goals in 206 appearances for the Merseysiders, believes the club should buckle to Lukaku’s demands and offer whatever he wants to keep him at Goodison Park – even if it requires a £250k per-week contract.
As quoted by The Daily Mail, he said on Sky Sports News earlier today; “The Lukaku situation is frustrating. If you are an Everton fan, you want it to be sorted out. You don’t want to be reading that your top striker is 99 per cent certain of signing a contract and then, all of a sudden, he is not going to sign.
“I think only that man himself, Lukaku, knows the answer to it. If it is about money, give him whatever he wants. Even if it is £250,000-a-week. If you keep that player and he scores the goals that get you in the Champions League, it is an absolute bargain.”
