Everton supporters remain pretty buoyant in the Transfer Tavern over a week on from their team’s much-needed 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace in the Premier League, a result which all but banished any lingering relegation fears.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their clash with the Eagles off the back of a 5-1 mauling at the hands of Arsenal in their previous league encounter, which saw them slip to just seven points clear of the bottom three. Yet the Toffees put greater distance between themselves and the relegation zone last time out as goals from Gylfi Sigurdsson, Oumar Niasse, and Tom Davies secured a routine success for the Merseysiders, with Luka Milivojevic’s late penalty not enough to prevent Everton’s ninth league win of the campaign.
Subsequently, there are many upbeat Evertonians in the Tavern ahead of Saturday’s trip to Watford, and they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from SporX (via Turkish.Football), which suggests that their team have joined the race for Galatasaray wing wizard Garry Rodrigues.
The 27-year-old only made the move to the Turkish giants back in January of last year but has certainly proven his worth with seven goals and ten assists in 44 appearances for the club, five goals and seven assists of which have come this term in their run to second place in the Super Lig.
And the Cape Verde international has reportedly been attracting the attention of Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle in the last few months, only for recent reports to suggest that Everton are also keeping tabs on the winger ahead of a possible summer move.
And were the Magpies to lose their Premier League status this term, the Toffees’ chances of landing Rodrigues would surely increase ten-fold.
Landlord’s verdict: Newcastle United reportedly launched two bids for Garry Rodrigues during the January window, only for Galatasaray to reject both and retain the 27-year-old.
Yet the Turkish giants may face a trickier battle in the summer as the Magpies and indeed Everton are reportedly keeping tabs on the winger, who has scored five goals and laid on seven assists for the club this season.
The Cape Verde international appears to be exactly the sort of player Sam Allardyce’s Toffees have missed so far this season, and would undoubtedly be a welcome addition to the Everton squad were he to move over the summer.
But whether the Merseysiders are able to beat Newcastle to his signature remains to be seen.
