Everton’s defensive crisis deepens after £15m man SNUBS Toffees

Everton Everton fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are hit with bad news by talkSPORT as they are set to miss out on their long-term target Cedric Soares with the player set to sign a new contract with Sporting Lisbon.

The highly-rated Portuguese defender has been on Roberto Martinez’s radar for a long period of time and the former Wigan Athletic boss was ready to step up his pursuit for the 23-year-old as he is desperate to source cover for the injured John Stones, who is sidelined until February.

It has been clear to punters that the situation at Goodison Park is far from ideal with the Toffees gaffer having to depend on veteran full back Tony Hibbert with youngster Tyias Browning ready to step into the side from reserve.

And punters believe that Martinez’s side are struggling to cope with the demands of the Europa League and that the Merseyside club should of brought in adequate cover over the summer.

And it is no surprise Everton fans are concerned with Phil Jagielka currently playing at 32, whilst his defensive partner Sylvain Distin is 36-years-old with the club under a lot of pressure to play the duo week in, week out.

It is apparent that the Everton were put off by Cedric Soares’ £15 million price tag set by Lisbon but now Martinez will have to look elsewhere as the youngster is set to sign a three-year extension at the Jose Alvalade, keeping him at the club where he began his career.
