Before the season has even begun, the feeling around St James' Park is already pretty ominous.

Following last night's defeat to Braga, Benitez admitted that things off the pitch weren't looking good and that further additions need be made to the squad before the transfer window closes.

With the arrival of Yoshinori Muto, there have been five new players brought into the squad but in truth, none have been the box office name the Toon faithful might have been hoping for.

Even more worrying for Newcastle fans is that club captain and fan favourite, Jamaal Lascelles has attracted interest from other Premier League clubs. According to The Sun, Everton are ready to splash out £30 million to sign the defender.

The Breakdown

From Everton's point of view, bringing in Lascelles would be a superb move and would give Michael Keane a solid defensive partner.

Ever since Lascelles became a regular player for the Benitez he has impressed. His superb performances and maturity on and off the pitch was rewarded when he was given the captaincy. Despite being 24, the defender is one of the club's most integral players and cannot be allowed to leave.

Rafa Benitez is very keen on the player but as we know, it's not uncommon for Mike Ashley to do something the fans won't like. If Everton submitted a reasonable bid - probably more than £30 million - it might just be too much for Ashley to turn down.

However, with Fabian Leheune's injury and given the late stage of the window it's probably unlikely that the Lascelles will be allowed to leave but it's certain,y not out of the question.
