Chelsea’s season is about to reach a climax, and the Blues’ clash with Liverpool could go one of two ways. A win will give them a small chance of finishing in the top-four this season, but anything else will likely condemn them to a spot in the Europa League ahead of next season.
Ahead of the game, then, Antonio Conte has some decisions to make that could well determine the fate of his team.
In the attack, he’s got to decide between utilising one of Alvaro Morata or Olivier Giroud or calling upon them both. In defence, he’s got to consider whether Andreas Christensen deserves a recall.
It’s the midfield that fans are concerned about, though.
Liverpool’s midfield is arguably the strongest facet of their team, with Jurgen Klopp often keen to bulk it out with depth and quality. Who Antonio Conte selects to counter that, then, will have a huge say in how this game pans out.
One player that fans don’t want to see play, it seems, is Frenchman Tiemoue Bakayoko.
The Frenchman featured for the Blues last week against Swansea City, and it’s fair to say that he didn’t impress. He failed to provide much of anything in the way of defensive composure or offensive quality.
It will come as no surprise, then, to hear that a whopping 72% of polled Chelsea fans are eager for him to be dropped this weekend. We recently ran a poll on the prospect, the full results of which can be seen below, and it’s fair to say that the results were very one-sided indeed.
It’s no real surprise that Bakayoko continues to be unpopular with fans. The 23-year-old has failed to adapt, and even now, as he reaches the end of his first season in England, he is showing no signs of improving.
He could have a role to play this weekend, and on his day he’d be an excellent option – but his day hasn’t come often enough this season.
Chelsea have a real decision on their hands this summer, as there’s an argument to be made that he should be loaned out, but for now, it appears as though the Chelsea faithful are just eager for him to remain on the bench.
