There are a few raised eyebrows in the Football Transfer Tavern this morning as Ben Jefferson arrives in the bar with news of a possible Premier League return for Lassana Diarra.
The journalist from The Express suggests that Manchester City and Arsenal could fight it out to land the former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder when the January transfer window opens next month.
The 28-year-old midfielder, who also spent a short spell with Arsenal before signing for Portsmouth during the 07/08 season, is currently playing for Lokomotiv Moscow.
He had left Pompey to join Madrid in 2009 and had made a big money transfer to Russian money bags Anzhi Makhachkala in 2012.
But he was part of the cull at Anzhi as owner Suleyman Kerimov decided to change his philosophy and Diarra was shipped out to Lokomotiv in August as he signed a four-year contract with the Russian outfit.
Now Russian reports suggest that his former club Arsenal and Manchester City are both keeping tabs with a view to a possible January swoop for the French international in January.
While Diarra is thought to be happy with life in Russia, a Premier League return could prove an attractive proposition. Although his reported current wages of £65,000-a-week may cause concern for any interested parties.
Are Arsenal really interested in doing ‘a Flamini’ and re-signing Diarra? Let us know your thoughts below.
