Ex-Chelsea boss plots raid on Stamford Bridge

Michael EssienHere in the Football Transfer Tavern, punters are looking up and moving towards the bar.

This is after The Sun claimed that one of the most unpopular Chelsea managers ever could well be set to return to the club.

Before any of our regulars break out the tequila, it has to be said that the Interim One is not considering returning as a manager, but instead to swoop for one of the current Chelsea players.

Rafael Benitez is reportedly keen on luring Michael Essien to Napoli and that may well be something Chelsea would be interested in entertaining.

The Ghanaian midfielder has played a fringe role at the club since his return from a loan spell at Real Madrid and it seems that Chelsea and indeed Essien himself would be open to a move.

As our landlord notes, it is rather funny that during Benitez’ spell at Chelsea he did not come into contact with Essien and we all know how the midfielder feels about Jose Mourinho – or Daddy as he is known to him as. Quite if Essien would want to play for a man his ‘daddy’ does not see eye to eye with remains to be seen!

Places in the middle of the park at Chelsea are more coveted than ever and given the arrival of Benfica’s Nemanja Matic yesterday, Essien may well see a move as the only way to play a game now Chelsea are out of the Capital One cup as well!

Will Essien link up with Rafa at Napoli? Let us know your thoughts below.
