The topic of David Luiz has Chelsea fans looking shocked here in the Football Transfer Tavern after the Daily Mail claimed he was actually offered a new deal at Stamford Bridge before his summer move.
The Brazilian claims that he turned down the new contract on offer and opted for a move to Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain instead – something that our punters find more than a little hard to believe.
As they note, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was never really keen on the Brazilian international defender and made that very clear so quite why the Blues would have then offered Luiz a new deal seems beyond us.
The former Benfica defender – who is as error prone as ever – claimed: “Chelsea offered me a new contract to stay but it was my choice to come here. I was happy with the plan PSG offered to me and I think it was exactly the right moment to move.
“I’m a lucky guy. I was playing for a big club like Chelsea and now I’ve got another opportunity to play for another big club. I’m enjoying it here.”
Despite the loss of Luiz, the Blues have managed to climb to the top of the Premier League table and are five points clear while also being top of their Champions League group to boot.
The Blues seem to be managing fine without Luiz and as our landlord points out, had Chelsea not agreed to sell him before the World Cup, they certainly would have after!
Chelsea fans. Was it simply a no-brainer to accept £50 million for David Luiz this summer? Let us know your thoughts below.
