Though the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are keen for their side to land a few more players this summer, the prospect of Danny Drinkwater moving to Stamford Bridge isn’t a particularly popular deal…
Sky Sports reportedly recently that the Blues are keen on the Englishman, and whilst he enjoyed a stellar spell with Leicester City in the 2015/16 season, he really struggled to make a similar mark in the last campaign.
However, former Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is firmly behind the move, and he thinks that his former Leicester City teammate is good enough to make the step up.
According to Talk Sport, he said: “I think he’s capable of making that step up.Whether or not he’s someone who will play week-in week-out, whether he’s good enough to make that step up to be a mainstream player in Chelsea’s first XI, we’ll only know once he makes that step if it happens”.
Adding, he said: “But he’s definitely got the ability”.
Schwarzer is, of course, well aware of both camps – given that he has played for both teams – and so he is well versed in recognising the qualities needed to succeed.
It’s unlikely that Drinkwater would be a starter at Stamford Bridge, but he could certainly do a job, particularly if he can impress alongside N’Golo Kante once more.
Danny Drinkwater is a pretty underwhelming name, but it must not be forgotten just how good he was for Leicester during their title winning campaign.
He was crucial alongside N’Golo Kante, and it is likely that the Frenchman would not have earned his big money move to Stamford Bridge without the assistance of Drinkwater.
With the sale of Nemanja Matic, there is a real gap in the squad for a midfielder of his quality – and so a move does make sense.
