Punters in the Football Transfer Tavern have been left somewhat shocked by the news from the The Express.
The paper reports that Dimitar Berbatov has emerged as a potential transfer target for Barcelona as they seek short-term cover for injured Lionel Messi.
While Gerardo Martino is understood to have faith in Alexis Sanchez and summer signing Neymar, the newly appointed boss is contemplating a move for the former Manchester United and Tottenham forward.
Other options appear to be too costly but the Bulgarian forward is out of contract at Craven Cottage and could join the Catalan club for a nominal fee.
The 32-year-old could be lured to Spain by the prospect of one final shot at playing at the highest level, even in a reduced role compared to what he currently enjoys in West London.
However, it remains to be seen whether Berbatov’s wage demands and expectations about playing time are compatible with Barca’s requirements.
Messi is expected to miss up to eight weeks with his hamstring tear picked up during last Sunday’s match against Real Betis.
Are Barca really looking at Berbatov this winter? Let us know your thoughts below.
