Huge news is just reaching us in the Football Transfer Tavern today with The Independent leading on an exclusive story that French big-spenders Monaco are ready to rip up the record books to secure Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.
Jack Pitt-Brooke from the very respected newspaper reports that the Ligue 1 side are preparing a bid of around £85 million as they look to land the 28-year-old in what would be a world record breaking deal.
The French club, backed by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev, have already forked out over £110 million on the signings of Radamel Falcao from Atletico Madrid and James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho of Porto.
They would now be prepared to offer the former Manchester United forward a world record salary of £17 million-a-year tax free as they look to take full advantage of his reported disillusionment with life at the Bernabeu. Ronaldo has two years remaining on his current deal with Real but has not yet agreed an extension due to a disagreement over a wage increase. Monaco would have no such problems.
It has been hoped in the tavern that Ronaldo, who has scored an incredible 199 goals in 201 games for Madrid, would follow Jose Mourinho to the Premier League this summer with possible interest from both Chelsea and Manchester United speculated.
However we normally trust reports from this particular publication and wait with anticipation to see if Monaco now make their move.
