This has rustled a few of the Manchester United fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern…
Man Utd’s £89 million purchase of Paul Pogba over the summer looked like a good piece of business by Jose Mourinho.
The midfielder had been in the form of his life, and was touted for a big money move by many in the Tavern.
But his performance in the Manchester Derby has left a few in the Football Transfer Tavern questioning whether the price was right for the Frenchman.
He was invisible during the hotly-contested fixture, and many United fans in the Tavern are hoping that it was a one-off.
Whilst many are pointing towards Pogba for his poor performance, one United fan leaning up against the bar thinks that the buck stops with Mourinho himself. He thinks that the Portuguese boss got it wrong tactically, and his inefficiency at using Pogba is costing the Frenchman his form.
Certainly a bold statement; but he doesn’t seem to be alone in his reservations about United’s new boss.
Rather than blaming the Frenchman himself, however, Jenas feels that it is Mourinho that should take the blame for incorrectly using him.
Despite being utilised as part of a two-man defensive pivot, Jenas has argued that: “He’s not a defensive or deep-lying midfielder”.
Jenas’ arguments are definitely compelling. Our landlord has argued since day one that Pogba needs to play as part of a midfield three – and he is seemingly being proven right by his performances thus far.
However, the Chelsea faithful in the Football Transfer Tavern have had their say on the matter; and have told the United faithful not to expect Mourinho to change his mind tactically anytime soon.
The Portuguese manager is insistent on playing the game his way – and that seemingly means utilising Pogba as part of United’s defensive midfield.
United fans – we want to hear from you! Is Pogba being played out of position?
