Offenbach? Where on earth is Offenbach?
Well, they are a third division team in central Germany. However, who on earth has fallen from the heights of the North London clubs to the ignominy of the German footballing backwater?
This 28-year old is no nobody, he won two FA Youth Cups with Arsenal and played 30 games for Spurs, playing so well, he was capped by England B. However, since being released by Wolves after 44 games his fall has been dramatic.
Rohan Ricketts, from North London and England to having to, trial to attempt to get a contract with Kickers Offenbach! All that via MOLDOVA?
Released by Barnsley, he found some notoriety with expansion team, Toronto FC, in the MLS where he was well regarded until they needed the Cap Space to sign Canadian international midfielder Ali Gerba. Yes we don’t know who that is either!
From there the fall was quick and dramatic, a failure to get a contract at Aberdeen lead to Hungary where he signed for Diósgyőri VTK and failure to break into their team lead to his release upon relegation.
Then Moldova, of all places, where Ricketts ended up playing in the Premier League with Dacia Chisinau, but then, practically every team in Moldova plays in Chisinau!
Unsurprisingly, life in Moldova was not to Rohan’s taste and he announced to talkSport back in October that he was off to play for second-tier Bundesliga side, FC Ingolstadt. Except, he failed to get a contract there and is now desperate to try and get a deal in the third-division with Kickers Offenbach, where he is currently on trial.
What happened to turn this guy into the international ‘runt of the litter’? I saw him at Spurs, he was skilful, not especially slow, I thought that, ok, he might drop to Championship level perhaps, but not to the kind of level he has.
What’s happened? It’s a serious question I’m asking!
