Newcastle United and Southampton supporters have been in contrasting moods in the Transfer Tavern this week, with the former downbeat after losing 3-1 to Chelsea on Saturday, while the latter are reasonably satisfied after clinching a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth a day later.
Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle halted a run of four successive Premier League defeats by drawing 2-2 with West Brom last week, but a brace from Eden Hazard and an Alvaro Morata header sealed a comfortable victory for Antonio Conte’s Blues on Saturday, thus extending the Magpies’ winless run to six games. Yet things were somewhat brighter for Mauricio Pellegrino’s Southampton, as they moved up to 11th in the table by picking up a point from their visit to the Vitality Stadium, with Charlie Austin’s second half goal cancelling out Ryan Fraser’s opener.
Thus, there have been differing emotions among both sets of supporters in the Tavern this week, yet both are likely to be intrigued and perhaps encouraged by a recent report from The Daily Mail, which suggests that the Premier League duo are interested in Dundee defender Jack Hendry.
The 22-year-old only made the move to the Scottish outfit during the summer after a two-year stint at League One side Wigan Athletic, and he has since gone from strength to strength with 21 appearances for Neil McCann’s side, netting two goals in the process.
And it appears that the centre-back’s fine efforts in the heart of the Dees backline has attracted interest from those south of the border, with reports suggesting that Benitez’s Newcastle and Pellegrino’s Southampton are keeping tabs on the Scotsman, as are Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace.
And with reports also suggesting that the Dundee board will meet at some stage this week to discuss Hendry’s future, there may be some good news to come for our resident Magpies and Saints fans in the near future.
Landlord’s verdict: Jack Hendry’s performances for Dundee since moving there over the summer have received much attention, not least from Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers who was full of praise and called the 22-year-old ‘excellent’ in their victory over the Dees earlier this season.
And there appears to be interest in the centre-back from several clubs south of the border, with Southampton and Newcastle, as well as Crystal Palace, reportedly keeping tabs on the defender ahead of a possible move in January.
Both sides have performed reasonably solidly at the back this term but further reinforcements, certainly for the long term, wouldn’t go amiss, and with the Dundee hierarchy reportedly set to meet later in the week regarding Hendry’s future, there are sure to be some intriguing developments to come for our resident Saints and Magpies supporters.
