Liverpool have been backed by former England star Carlton Palmer to invest in January, if the right players become available.
Palmer backs Reds
The Reds are currently going through a major injury crisis in their defensive department, with key assets Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez ruled out with long-term serious knee injuries, whilst Joel Matip has also been in and out of the side with various issues.
With this in mind, Liverpool have been tipped by Palmer to make early bids for players – only on the basis that they are players who have been on their watch list for a while, as he doesn’t see The Reds as a team who will panic buy just to fill in a gap.
Speaking exclusively to Football Transfer Tavern, Palmer said: “They’ll only buy if there is somebody who’s genuinely on their list and they and they look at the situation now and think ‘well, yes, we probably would have targeted him in the summer and if we can get him out now, we’ll go for him now because of the situation we’re in’.”
Transfer Tavern Verdict
With Liverpool currently top of the table, any further injuries could seriously hamper their title charge and their chances of retaining their Premier League crown.
While Fabinho has been doing an excellent job at the back, Matip continues to struggle with fitness issues and if he is forced to miss more time, that could leave Klopp without an established centre-back to choose from.
In what has been a strange year for football as an entity so it will be interesting to see how much the club’s majority shareholder John Henry is willing to sanction in January as Klopp looks for more defensive options.
