Experienced Arsenal midfielder set to be axed this summer

FlaminiThe Transfer Tavern has been awash with reports today that state an experience and long-serving player will be leaving the Gunners this summer- but the Arsenal fans are raising a glass in celebration.

The Daily Mirror states that Mathieu Flamini, who turns 32 next month, has not been offered an extension on his £80k-a-week contract that expires this summer.

Flamini, a French international, has come into the Arsenal midfield regularly amid the recent injury problems but his performances haven’t been impressive- with the latest disaster coming on Tuesday evening as he conceded a penalty just 37 seconds after his introduction.

With Mohamed Elneny arriving from FC Basel in January, and Arsenal continuing to eye new midfield additions for the summer, Flamini is regarded as surplus to requirements- and it’s a similar situation for Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky, who also see their contracts expire this summer.

Whilst the loss of three experienced midfielders in one window would usually be a concern, it’s been clear for a while that none of the trio are up to scratch and with Arsenal’s depth in midfield numbers, only an anchoring player is likely to be signed.

Our landlord feels it would be a very strange move to offer Flamini fresh terms, though he would like to see Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky given roles behind the scenes.

Arsenal fans, who should you bring in to replace this midfield trio? Let us know in the comments below!
