Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have had their attention courted by comments made by an experienced defender, which has led to their burgers going cold as they discuss whether this would be a good deal for the club.
Experienced Reds defender Kolo Toure has told the Liverpool Echo that he will fight tooth and nail to earn himself a new deal at Anfield, with the Ivorian centre-half expected to be released upon the expiration of his contract this summer.
Liverpool are set for a defensive overhaul this summer under Jurgen Klopp and many in the bar felt the recent capture of Joel Matip, who will join from Schalke on a free transfer at the end of the season, would spell the end for Toure at Liverpool.
However, the defender himself has other ideas as the former Arsenal and Manchester City man praised his current employers and revealed his desire to prove himself as deserving of a new deal.
“The future is not the most important thing for me. What’s important is what’s happening right now. I’m in the team at the moment and I am showing every game that I’m still here. It doesn’t matter what other people say, I have this smile, I’m very happy and I always give 100% for this club. This club is amazing.”
“If I keep performing that will force people to change their minds (about a new contract). Sometimes you can make people change their minds by performing well and that’s my challenge right now.”
“I can show people by my games that I’m still a top player. That’s all I can do. I am a fighter and I will fight until the end.”
Our landlord feels Toure would be good to keep at the club solely as an example to the younger defenders in the squad, as he feels Klopp’s side will need this sort of influence heading into next season.
Liverpool fans, should Toure stay at Anfield? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
