The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern think that his time at Stamford Bridge is winding down…
Antonio Conte has overseen the beginnings of a period of change at Stamford Bridge, with the methods of his predecessors slowly being fazed out in favour of his own ideas.
On the field, Conte has revolutionised the way that Chelsea play – with the team swapping formations from 4-2-3-1 for 3-4-3 this season.
His changes have gone beyond a simple formation, though, with there also a pretty significant change in personnel at Stamford Bridge too. A few of the so-called ‘old guard’ have slowly been phased out, with John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic the major casualties of Conte’s shift.
John Terry has struggled with fitness for much of the season, but the absence of Branislav Ivanovic is markedly more intentional. The Serbian has been replaced in the Chelsea first team by Victor Moses, and given how well the Nigerian has been performing – a return to the first team is looking increasingly unlikely.
Sport-Express are reporting that Ivanovic is ‘close’ to a move to Zenit – with the defender’s contract at Chelsea set to expire at the end of the season.
There is no mention of when a deal could be done, but given how little football Ivanovic has had so far this season – a move over the next few days might not be entirely out of the question for the Serbian defender.
Whilst Ivanovic has fallen out of favor at Stamford Bridge, the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern will never forget all that he has contributed to the club. A regular since he arrived in London, Ivanovic has won so many trophies with the Blues – and his heroic performances en route to the 2012 Champions League final will live long in the memory.
