Chelsea’s major summer rebuild could be set to claim another casualty, with the fans in the bar concerned after comments from an experienced member of their squad.
Goal quotes 28-year-old midfielder John Obi Mikel as threatening to walk from Stamford Bridge if he isn’t handed first-team assurances for next season, with the Blues set for another managerial change in the close season.
The Nigerian international was used sparingly by Jose Mourinho before the Portuguese boss’ dismissal in mid-December and although Mikel has seen his opportunities improve under interim boss Guss Hiddink, there’s no certainty he will retain a place next season.
With Antonio Conte widely considered to be the man coming into Stamford Bridge, and a host of big names emerging as Chelsea targets in the tabloids, Mikel has made his position pretty clear.
“I have one more season with Chelsea but I know when this season ends, we will definitely sit down and try to sort out whatever needs to be sorted out. If it means me leaving, fine. If it means me staying, then I have to play because one thing I don’t want to do is to sit on the bench like I did before.”
“It’s not very nice, especially now when you have kids you just want to do what you can to play. Wherever it is I just want to play. When this season ends we will definitely sort out the contracts.”
With the threat of crucial assets like Eden Hazard, Diego Costa and Thibaut Courtois leaving due to the absence of Champions League football, losing Mikel could be another bitter blow.
