The Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern have been in since last night celebrating the imminent arrival of Spanish international Alvaro Morata after the Blues agreed a fee with Champions League winners Real Madrid to bring him to London.
The Premier League champions had looked nailed on to sign Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku in what would have been a fairy-tale homecoming, until former manager Jose Mourinho swooped in to take him to Manchester United.
With the former Everton man off the market Antonio Conte moved in on Morata and while most outlets are reporting the fee to be in the region of £70m, Sky Sports News reporter Kaveh Solhekol understands otherwise.
The transfer expert claims that the initial fee paid for the former Juventus man is actually £58m, and could then rise to ‘about £70m’.
While the fee is then less than originally thought, it still represents a club record deal, surpassing the £50m paid to Liverpool for the services of Fernando Torres, though the resident Blues here in the Tavern are hoping for a much better return than they got from Torres.
Chelsea fans, we want to hear from you! Do you think Morata will deliver this season? Let us know…
