On Sunday, Chelsea travelled to St James Park and were very lucky to come away with all three points in a game where a few dodgy refereeing decisions and key moments went against The Magpies, despite the heroics from their new-look backline. In particular, new boy Fabian Schar impressed the supporters.

If Schar can put in the same shift he did against Chelsea on a weekly basis then there’s no reason why he can’t go down as a hero in the Northeast. The Swiss international defended heroically and was very unlucky to have a penalty awarded against him for what was a brilliant last-ditch tackle on Marcos Alonso, however, the referee obviously didn’t see Schar’s contact with the ball and gave it.
Alongside fellow debutant Federico Fernandez, Schar looked comfortable and you wouldn’t have known that it was his debut if you hadn’t been told. The fact that he stepped up to the plate despite the absence of the club’s number one defender and club captain, Jamaal Lascelles speaks volumes about the 26-year-old’s maturity and ability and the Geordies will be loving having him at the club if he can keep putting in displays like that on Sunday.

Thought you did well yesterday. Shame about the ref tho! Welcome to #NUFC

The Magpies are loving having Schar at the club and will be keen to see how he gets on in their next Premier League clash against Manchester City.
