Failed deal for £27m-rated Steven Nzonzi could cost Arsenal this season

Arsenal didn’t manage to bring in any last-minute deals yesterday and it may come back to the haunt the club.

Although the Gunners managed to bring in five new signings early in the season, Arsenal still needed to bring a winger, a defender and a midfield.

With Lucas Perez now at West Ham, Arsenal only have Alex Iwobi, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Reiss Nelson as the viable wingers behind Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang.

Some might argue that Danny Welbeck could also play there but in truth, he’s not really the quality Arsenal need going forward.

Although Arsenal signed Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi, the club are still lacking a physical holding midfielder.

One player they really should’ve pushed to sign, is Sevilla midfielder, Steven Nzonzi whom they were heavily linked with throughout the summer.

The Breakdown

Aside from Lucas Torreira, Arsenal don’t really have a midfielder who can do a defensive role for the club.

Both Elneny and Ramsey are more box-to-box players, while Guendouzi and Maitland-Niles haven’t fully established themselves in the team.

Having fallen out with Sevilla following a fairly successful tenure with the club, Nzonzi is an incredibly smart midfielder.

He reads the game well, can take the ball off the defence, and although he may not be a pass master like Santi Cazorla, he used the ball very well.

Moreover, he already has experience of playing in the league and could’ve been a key player for Emery, especially in the early weeks of the season.

Valued at £27 million by Transfermarkt his price may have just exceeded Arsenal’s budget but even so, Arsenal may have missed a trick here.
