The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern had high hopes for this season, with many fans dreaming that they would finally win the big one. They’ve gotten close to the Premier League title in recent years, but they’re yet to go the distance.
However, this season, if anything, the Lilywhites have regressed.
They’ve retained their spot in the Champions League, which is great, but they haven’t had the same consistency and gusto that saw them challenge at the top for a few years running.
You could argue that the buck stops with Mauricio Pochettino, but the Argentine has been producing miracles in North London for a while now, and so the finger must be pointed, at least in part, to some of his more disappointing players.
Most regulars have enjoyed good form this year, but the problem for some has been a lack of consistency, and that’s been a problem for the club.
With that said, Pochettino has these 2 Tottenham to blame for their failed title challenge this season…
Dele Alli has been good this season. At times he’s been great. However, it’s hard to suggest that he’s been at his best.
He’s bagged just 9 goals this season – half of his tally last season – and there was a period early in the season in which he looked very poor.
He’s picked it up as the season has gone on, and he deserves credit for that, but that early season lull did cost Tottenham somewhat.
If he can improve that consistency, Spurs could go to the next level next season.
Hugo Lloris is widely recognised as one of Europe’s best goalkeepers, but it’s fair to say it hasn’t been the best season from the Frenchman.
This season he’s made 5 errors leading to a goal, and simply put, that’s too many.
He’s their captain, and he is still one of the best in the Premier League, but errors this season have been costly, and a repeat of that form next season could see the Lilywhites fail once more.
You’d expect him to bounce back, though.
