Faitout Maouassa turned down January move to St James’ Park

Newcastle United will be desperate to ensure consistency from here on in until the end of the season, with a trip to Molineux next on the agenda.

The Magpies have definitely improved under the guidance of Rafa Benitez in recent times, but things are still far from perfect as they’re still at risk of slipping into the relegation picture.

However, it appears as if the Tyneside club failed to secure a January transfer target, as according to L’Equipe (via The Mag), Faitout Maouassa rejected a move to St James’ Park last month.

Antonio Barreca made the move to Newcastle last month but it now appears as if he was more of a last resort, with Maouassa confirming that there was an approach from Newcastle before they went for Jordan Lukaku and then Barreca.

Indeed, Stade Rennais left-back Maouassa has suggested that he rejected a move to Newcastle in January.

Here’s what the Frenchman had to say about the offer from the Magpies:

“I admit that…Newcastle, it shocked me.

“Because the Premier League is a dream for everybody.

“However, I wasn’t ready [for that step up].

“I must still develop [before considering that kind of transfer.”

So, it looks as if the Magpies attempted to sign Maouassa, who is valued at £3.6 million (by Transfermarkt), prior to moving for their other targets, which won’t exactly please fans as they had to settle for their third target in Barreca.

Indeed, the Magpies could return for the Ligue 1 ace in the summer transfer window, but this could all depend on how he performers from here on in until the end of the season.
