Today’s massive match in the fight for Champions League football ended in somewhat of a stalemate in the sunshine at the Bridge. Chelsea’s attacking players and forward thinking midfield players had a very disappointing afternoon and will have to improve in Portugal in Tuesday night.
Cech = 8 – One of the better performers on the day, didn’t put a foot wrong after some shaky recent performances and made 2 crucial saves to earn Chelsea a point.
Bosingwa = 5 – A player simply not good enough for a top level Premier League club. Despite keeping Bale quiet, this was mainly due to the work of Ramires. Attacking play was poor and he looks a certainty to leave in the summer.
Cahill = 8 – A true English defending and looks a fabulous addition to play alongside Terry. Made a crucial goal line clearance from Adebayor and never put a foot wrong all afternoon.
Terry = 8 – Proved once again how crucial he is to Chelsea, a true legend and captain. Ray Wilkins said in the build up that the clean sheets come when Terry plays and he was proved right as Terry showed why he is a must a Euro 2012.
Cole = 7 – Despite rarely showing his attacking threat he made a great block late in the 1st half to deny V.D.Vaart and looked comfortable all afternoon.
Essien = 8 – Protected the back four admirably and showed why he is considered one of the best holding players in the league. Broke up numerous attacks with tough tackling and rarely gave the ball away.
Lampard = 6 – Disappointing day for super Frank, sat very deep and although probably following instructions perhaps should have pushed on towards the end. Should have won a penalty in the 1st half although it was a 50-50 challenge.
Mata = 6 – Struggled to get into the game from the get go. Seemed to be slipping and sliding all over the place and definitely looks more comfortable when Torres is ahead of him.
Ramires = 7 – Although offering little in attack his defensive work can not be ignored. Was basically doing two jobs with Bosingwa offering little help.
Drogba = 5 – A shadow of the Drogba the Stamford Bridge faithful are used too. Seemed disinterested all afternoon after being left on the bench for two games didn’t really press for a start against Benfica. Got out muscled and did not lead the line well, had no meaningful shots and was a poor focal point of the team.
Sturridge = 5 – Offered very little in attack, missed Chelsea’s best chance when Drogba’s flick on put him through and drifted too much from the wing meaning the team lost shape and attacks were to narrow.
Luiz = 6 – Looked a much better option to fill in for Ivanovic than Bosingwa. Better attacking option and defended well again when called upon.
Torres = 6 – Only given 15 minutes so couldn’t be considered good or bad hence the average rating. After Drogba’s poor afternoon and given his recent improved performances surely Torres should be given Chelsea’s number 1 striker position.
Kalou = N/A – Doesn’t deserve a rating considering his late arrival into the match and with Chelsea on the back foot when he did make an appearance.
All in all a disappointing afternoon for Chelsea with many stars underperforming. No doubt the point suits Spurs more and with the Emirates and Anfield still to visit our faint hopes of Champions League football seem to have evaporated. Maybe winning the Champions League will be our best shot at entering next years competition, so lets just do that.
Friedel = 8 Stuck to his line again, Mata hit the post, but he otherwise had the measure of Chelsea.
Benny = 7 A brief moment of madness but otherwise enterprising shift.
Younes = 7 Some way to go to match the Ledley King of old, but right now so has Ledley King.
Gallas = 9 It was a masterclass in maturity.
Walker = 8 One Of his best performances yet.
Parker = 8 Every inch a captain.
Sandro = 6 Ring Rusty.
Modric = 8 off the pace in the first half, dynamic in the second.
Bale = 8 Played for the team, not for his CV.
VDV= 7 Showed his maturity and class.
Adebayor = 8 Selfless in attack but poor finishing.
