Fans on Twitter just aren’t having the latest ambitious Southampton rumour

The Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are as shocked as everyone else to see themselves linked with a Barcelona player. According to Sky Sports, Spain and Barca striker, Paco Alcacer is being closely monitored by The Saints as they look to boost their striking options in the summer. The club will need to stay in the Premier League to have any hope of bringing the former Valencia man to St Mary’s.

Southampton have suffered some serious problems with their forward’s this season. Charlie Austin is the club’s top goalscorer with six goals in just six starts for the south coast club. The Saints were hoping for a degree of resurgence under new manager Mark Hughes and found it momentarily when they dispatched Wigan 2-0 at the DW stadium to fire themselves into the FA Cup’s last four. However, it was shortlived as West Ham hammered the Saints 3-0 at the London Stadium, with Hughes’ former golden boy Marko Arnautovic haunting him again, scoring twice in the game.

Mark Hughes has a massive job on his hands as he faces seven crucial Premier League games before the end of the season, with the ultimate aim of survival. Southampton sit two points from safety, although they face possibly the toughest run-in of the relegation-threatened clubs. Six of their last seven games come against teams in the top half of the Premier League as a number of pundits and fans are beginning to write off the strugglers. If the club had the goals of Paco Alcacer to rely on this season, there’s not much doubt that they’d already be safe, however, that’s not the case and they look unlikely to survive and recruit the services of the 24-year-old.
