Newcastle have been one of the more inactive teams in the transfer market this summer.

Under Mike Ashley's tactic of selling before buying, Newcastle have only brought in four players with only two actually costing the club any money.

As it stands, Fabian Schar and Martin Dubravka are the club's joint highest signings this summer, both costing the club £3.6 million according to Transfermarkt. The Magpies have been linked with a host of other player but as of yet nothing else has been confirmed since the arrival of Fabian Schar.

In midfield, the club had been linked with a move for Lille's Brazilian star, Thiago Maia. Unfortunately for Magpies fans, Stuart Rayner of the Newcastle Chronicle is reporting that the club has no interest in signing the midfielder contrary to reports.

The Breakdown

Joining Lille from Santos last season, Maia is an incredibly talented midfielder. The young Brazilian can take the ball under pressure situations and then play the ball forward with absolute ease.

If Newcastle could've have brought him in, they would've got an absolute steal. However, according to the report, Rafa Benitez is not interested in buying a new midfielder, even on loan.

The Brazilian may have probably exceeded the club's small budget and in truth, it's not the positions they need to strengthen the most as the transfer window counts down.

While Maia looks like he's going to be a potential star, Newcastle need to make sure they bring in a left-back and a striker before the end of the window.
