Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to the battle between their club captain, Jamaal Lascelles, and the likes of Ben Mee, James Tarkowski and Alfie Mawson to be in contention for an England call-up. Lascelles has been in a scintillating vein of form this campaign as the Magpies look more and more likely to survive the drop.
Tarkowski, Mee and Mawson (really!?) in contention for England squad. No mention of our captain Jamaal Lascelles. pic.twitter.com/1HXlofSA60

Jamaal Lascelles has developed a reputation in the North East for being a fearless leader on the pitch who will always give 110% for his team. Which has led the Newcastle fans propping our bar up to show their confusion at the fact that their main man in the Toon Army defensive line may have been overlooked for an England call. The England squad is set to be announced today ahead of fixtures against the Netherlands and Italy on the 24th and 27th March and according to the Times, other players are under consideration.
Despite the news that Lascelles could be snubbed by Gareth Southgate, the defender will be focused on his club’s final eight games of the season. Newcastle currently sit five points clear of the drop zone after a fantastic 3-0 win over fellow strugglers, Southampton last Saturday and now only need two more wins before they can really start planning for another season in England’s top flight.
You can read the local Magpies’ verdict on Lascelles here:
Their loss, our gain. If he doesn’t go with England he can’t get injured on international duty. In the form of his life but he’s young and his chance will come, allows him to focus entirely on the task at hand at NUFC and should ensure we have our captain fit for Huddersfield

Who cares…no risk of injuring himself gets to be fresh for his club…personally would love it if he doesnt get picked.

This is a good thing. If Lascelles played like we know he can at the World Cup do you think we'd keep ahold of him? And there's the injury aspect as well

Be greatful lads. The worst thing that ever happens to players at smaller clubs is joining the international team.

He should be in the starting XI, let alone the squad. I cannot see a better English center back right now. Stones? Don't make me laugh!
