Fantasy Football Spy – Torres : A gamble worth taking?

FernandoTorresWelcome to this weeks installment of Fantasy Football Spy, the weekly round up of Fantasy News and tips which all goes to prove that I am utter bobbins at the whole Fantasy nonsense and goes some way to explaining why my Fantasy team is more akin to Portsmouth than Chelsea at the moment.

This Weekends Fixtures;

(Saturday) Portsmouth V Burnley, Aston Villa V Hull, Wolves V Bolton, Arsenal v Stoke, Blackburn v Liverpool, Wigan v Birmingham, West Ham v Man Utd, Man City v Chelsea

(Sunday) Fulham v Sunderland, Everton v Tottenham

While the temptation may be to play Arsenal’s attackers against Stoke, it’s worth remembering Stoke have an excellent defensive record and Arsenal, without Van Persie and Bendtner, do not pose the same attacking threat. Besides they’ve lost three in a row now and Arsene’s not shaking hands with anybody. Eduardo should play, but whether he’ll get any change out of a miserly Stoke defence is another question. A better fantasy idea may be to play Arsenal’s defenders, Vermaelen in particular could pose Stoke a few problems, while Fabregas is a shoe-in on any team if you have him.

Fernando Torres should return for Liverpool, although his fitness may be questionable and I’d be tempted to hold off playing him this week if you have another option available. One to consider may be Hugo Rodallega of Wigan who has been bang in form this season and should get chances against an improving Birmingham City. Expect Wayne Rooney’s good form to continue at West Ham, it seems likely he will play a lone striker role at Upton Park so I’d not be too reliant on Berbatov. However Fletcher, Giggs and Carrick should all start for United and may be worthy of consideration.

The big game of the weekend comes at Eastlands where Mark Hughes faces an acid test of his Manchester City sides top four credentials by the visit of Chelsea. Despite their 3-0 win in midweek, City’s form of late has been sketchy in terms of wins and nothing less than victory against Chelsea will suffice for City, if they are to be regarded as genuine title challengers. It’s hard to see their defence, which has looked shaky at times against much weaker opposition, being able to keep out the rampant Drogba and Anelka for 90 minutes. Ancelotti’s Chelsea look a strong bet and the likes of Drogba, Anelka, Lampard and Joe Cole should all be good choices for teams this week,just remember that Salomon Kalou is injured at present.

Best of luck for the weekend, and I’ll leave you with my Fantasy Select XI for this weekend, all players who I think will score well this weekend for their respective teams :

Goalkeeper : Manuel Almunia (Arsenal)

Defenders : Graham Alexander (Burnley), Thomas Vermaelen (Arsenal), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United)

Midfielders : Darren Fletcher (Manchester United), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), James Milner (Aston Villa), Frank Lampard (Chelsea)

Attackers : Didier Drogba (Chelsea), Hugo Rodallega (Wigan Athletic)
