This weekend sees some interesting encounters in the Premier League, with Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester City and Aston Villa all looking for three points to keep up the pressure at the top of the table. After Ledley King, Ashley Young and James Beattie all picked up good points in the last set of fixtures, which players will do well this weekend? Here are four suggestions:
Peter Crouch – with Jermaine Defoe being suspended for this weekend’s game after being sent off against his former club Portsmouth in his last outing for Spurs, Crouch will be eager to take what is a rare opportunity for him at White Hart Lane. Even though Saturday’s opponents Stoke are strong at the back, Crouch will still cause their defence problems and will be a threat at set-pieces, and is a good bet for either a goal or an assist, so maybe Robbie Keane is also worth a punt.
Frank Lampard – having ended his scoring drought for Chelsea against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, Lampard will be looking to continue a scoring streak against Blackburn on Saturday. Having conceded eight goals in their last two games, Blackburn are hardly water-tight at the back and Chelsea should be able to take advantage of that. Lampard will have plenty of shooting opportunities and should bag a goal or two at Stamford Bridge in a home victory.
Richard Dunne – the Aston Villa defender has already scored two goals for his new club this season and always looks a threat from set-pieces which are provided with such quality by Ashley Young. Villa face Wolves this weekend, a team who has only scored three home league goals this season and a solid Villa side have a good chance of earning a clean sheet. Defensive teammate James Collins would also be a good purchase, having impressed since his move from West Ham.
Shay Given – the Irish shot-stopper is one of the best ‘keepers in the Premier League as he proved during his time at Newcastle. His current side Manchester City face Fulham at home on Sunday, a game in which City should dominate possession as Fulham sit deep and look to earn a point. City have also begun to look more solid at the back as Joleon Lescott settles in and with Given in goal, City should be able to earn a few clean sheets this season at the City of Manchester Stadium.
