FC Twente Talent Is Just The Man To Reignite The Kop

Once again there are winds of change for the red half of Merseyside. A new manager and a new footballing philosophy have been introduced at Anfield, with it only a matter of time that we see new players.

With the Euros taking the spotlight, Brendan Rodgers can quietly build his Liverpool side for next season. By the sound of things, the direction he is taking looks promising.

According to a report by Liverpool Kop, the Reds have recently been courting the services of Dutch youngster Luuk de Jong. The FC Twente man has 39 goals in 76 appearances, helping Steve McClaren’s side to their first Dutch title in 2009-10, with legend Patrick Kluivert billing him ‘the number one striker for Holland in the near future’.

Yet de Jong seems keen to leave his homeland, with his agent confirming that any offers would be considered by the 21 year old. Further in the report, De Jong’s agent went on to confirm that Liverpool are indeed closely following the Twente star.

However with multiple teams interested, it won’t be easy. The Daily Mail recently reported that Newcastle were interested in the Dutchman, especially if Demba Ba leaves to Spurs in the summer. In addition the striker himself has stated his desire to play for Bayern Munich, meaning any interest from the Champions League finalists would make Liverpool’s task even more difficult.

Yet it cannot be stressed how important such a signing would be at Anfield. Having scored less in the entire campaign than champions Manchester City did at home last season, Liverpool need more goals if they are to challenge for a Champions League position. De Jong could only help this problem. With a boisterous playing style similar to international teammate Robin van Persie, the youngster should have no problem adjusting to the Premier League.

This is not to say that the careers of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll at Anfield are over. The former Newcastle player has carried his improved form from the end of last season into the European Championships for England, whilst Suarez was Liverpool’s only real attacking threat during most parts of last season. No doubt the club and its fans will be hoping that the Uruguayan can return to the form he was in before his 8 match ban, but in no way should Suarez or Carroll see talk of de Jong as a threat.

For a comparatively cheap fee of around £15 million, de Jong would be a bargain buy for Liverpool. With the option of playing him as the front man with Suarez working behind, or partnering him upfront with Andy Carroll, the Dutchman opens up Liverpool’s attacking options and gives them a more threatening front-line for next season.

Whilst he is only 21 years old and still has more to learn about the game, the striker has demonstrated his talents domestically and continentally for Twente and could be an important source of goals for Liverpool.

Having missed out on the likes of Demba Ba and Marko Marin, Liverpool have thwarted chances to obtain cheap young talent in attacking positions. With regards to de Jong, Rodgers can simply not afford to do it again.
