West Ham United’s transfer window has been one of the most intriguing sub-plots of the summer ahead of the new Premier League season, and a recent report from the London Evening Standard suggests their multi-million spree is far from finished.
According to the report, the Hammers have had a bid worth £27 million rejected by Celta Vigo for Maximiliano Gomez, just 1 year after he joined the club from Defensor in a deal worth £3.6 million.
The same report claims that Celta Vigo are holding out for a figure closer to £35 million – a deal which could be just out of West Ham’s reach following their extravagant spending in recent weeks.
Following a season in which Gomez announced himself in La Liga with 18 goals from just 36 appearances at the spearhead of Celta Vigo’s attack, it’s no wonder that the £35 million figure is being thrown around.
With Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko already added to Pellegrini’s attacking options this summer, the signing of a new striker is not exactly a necessity considering Javier Hernandez and Marko Arnautovic are both available to lead the line, but there’s no doubt Gomez’s arrival would be a huge boost for everybody involved with the club.
And his arrival could have a particularly profound effect on Anderson, as his presence in the penalty area will give the lightning-quick winger a genuine target to aim for in dangerous positions with his 6ft 1ins frame and commanding aerial presence.
Gomez managed to notch a whopping total of 9 headed goals last season (via Whoscored), a record only bettered by Cristhian Stuani who headed home 10 goals in La Liga for Girona.
His record illuminates the extent of the threat he poses in the penalty area and, considering Anderson provided 7 assists from just 9 starts for Lazio last season, there’s no doubt that Gomez’s presence at West Ham would enable the Brazilian wing-wing wizard to thrive next season.
Anderson’s direct approach and desire to get telling crosses into the box at every available opportunity are two qualities which will add a threatening dynamic to Pellegrini’s attack.
Add Gomez to the equation and the West Ham supporters might just be looking at the most formidable attacking combination they have seen at the club for a very long time.
