The News of The World are reporting that Real Madrid pair, Xabi Alonso and Lassana Diarra are both targets for Manchester United as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to bulk up his lack-lustre midfield.
The central midfield has been the weak link in the Old Trafford set up for some time, gaining lots of criticism from pundits and fans alike. The Champions League final against Barcelona outlined the lesser quality of Michael Carrick and the ageing years of Ryan Giggs, leaving Ferguson with no option but to add some creative force to his midfield this summer.
The recent retirement of Paul Scholes has only added to the problem and Xabi Alonso is believed to be the perfect replacement for the ginger legend. Xabi Alonso’s range of passing, both long and short gives him the ability to dictate play from the midfield. His ability to spot a pass is reminiscent of the great Paul Scholes and along with his Premier League experience makes him an ideal option for Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Spaniard would be a fantastic acquisition for the Manchester club but it is unlikely that the World Cup winner would be willing to move to Liverpool’s great rivals given his Anfield past. In the current inflated transfer market, it is questionable whether Real Madrid would be willing to let one of their prized assets leave after only one season at the club.
Lassana Diarra is also target for the Old Trafford club after spending most of the time on the bench since Jose Mourinho took over the reins at the Bernabeu. Lass is believed to favour a move back to England if he can’t force his way into the starting line up at Real, and where better than the theatre of dreams?
The Frenchman would cost considerably less than Xabi Alonso and both the player and the club would be willing to push the transfer through. The former-Portsmouth man is unlikely to add much of a creative influence to the United midfield however, as he is much more of a defensive minded and ball winning midfielder.
Manchester United during the Alex Ferguson era have never utilised a holding midfielder as they tend to dominate the possession of most matches and so a move for Diarra would not be beneficial except for games against the big clubs. The player would not get a starting berth at the club on regular occasions as he cannot contribute to all aspects of the midfield role expected at the club, and therefore you have to believe Xabi Alonso would be a much more suitable fit.
A move for Lassana Diarra could work as long as the asking price is to Manchester United’s liking as they will not want to shell out a ridiculous amount on a player who is unlikely to play week in, week out. Xabi Alonso would be a very astute move by Sir Alex Ferguson and a perfect replacement for Paul Scholes.
Given his Merseyside history and valuation, it looks increasingly unlikely that we will see the Spaniard donning the red shirt next season… But who knows, stranger things have happened, we shall see…
