Alex Ferguson confirmed the news that Manchester United fans have been dreading hearing, Wayne Rooney is determined to leave the club.
Ferguson has maintained his silence as the speculation has mounted over the players intentions, but in todays press confrence the truth was unveiled:
‘The player is adamant. He says he wants to leave. We have to deal the next part in terms of this request’
‘We’ve done nothing but help him at this club. Manchester United is that kind of club. We’re as bemused as anyone can be’
‘We’ve got to a stage now where I feel we have to keep the door open simply because he’s such a good player and …’
‘David Gill told me [Rooney’s agent] said he wanted away. I couldn’t believe it. It was a shock.’
He then went on to say that Rooney would not be featuring in United’s Champions League game this week due to an ‘ankle injury’.
That old chestnut! I wonder how often this phantom ankle injury will be occuring until Rooney parts company with United.
