Manchester United are a regular topic of conversation over a pint and a packet of crisps in the Football Transfer Tavern, with Alan Nixon of the Daily Mirror informing us that Sir Alex Ferguson is hot on the trail of Athletic Bilbao midfielder Oscar de Marcos.
A creative midfielder is understood to be Fergie’s top priority in the January transfer window, and the 23-year-old who impressedso much against his side in the Europa League last season fits the bill.
Sir Alex is understood to have sent scouts to watch de Marcos in action against Barcelona, a player who he wanted to sign in the summer, but was put off by the £25 million transfer fee.
United are well aware their midfield is in need of freshening up, with Scholes and Giggs coming towards the end of their careers, and Darren Fletcher only recently returning to the side after a long spell out.
The estimated cost for de Marcos in January would be around the £20m mark, a fee Ferguson would not mind paying as he would still be eligable to feature for the club in the latter stages of the Champions League.
