All is rosy at Old Trafford for the time being, it appears that Sir Alex Ferguson’s men have a great chance of winning at least one trophy this season, and his current team is maturing at a good pace.
Other than perhaps being a little short in the centre of the midfield, there are not too many issues that haven’t been addressed or aren’t in the process of being so.
Sir Alex has recognised that the next area to look at for improvement is the heart of his defence. Chris Smalling has undoubtedly been a success, but Rio Ferdinand is continuing to have a troublesome time with injury and Nemanja Vidic also has some question marks over this fitness. It is for these reasons that the Manchester United hierarchy are casting their beady eyes over Europe to find another defender to add to the mix.
The man they have identified according to the Daily Mirror is long term Arsenal target and Belgian international Jan Vertonghen.
The centreback came through the youth academy at Ajax, and made his debut for the club in the 06-07 season, he has been a steady performer and has drawn plaudits throughout his career. He is now in his 5th season with the side and it appears that he will be on the move this Summer.
He spoke at the start of this current campaign talking of his desire to play in England, he said:
“I have always said to myself I want one more year at Ajax, hopefully become a champion and then move….I am ambitious. I want to play in the Premier League. The Premier League is my favourite competition but I need one more year before I am ready.”.
Well with that final year almost over and with Ajax currently 6 points off league leaders PSV in the Eredivisie it seems as if one of his hopes may not come true. There is still the dream of playing in the Premier League very much alive however. Last Summer he expressed his interest in playing with international team mate and former club team mate Thomas Vermaelen at the Emirates, and it always appeared that they would be favourites for his signature, but now things seem more unclear.
The Manchester United hierarchy however believe that a bid of £13million will convince Ajax to sell, and they also believe that they will be an attractive proposition to the player. I suppose their hopes are that the chance to win trophies will outshine the chance to play with his friend…Sorry Arsenal fans.
Vertonghen is a very talented player and I think he will be a great asset to either club, whichever one will secure him remains to be seen but I am pretty sure that he wont be playing in Amsterdam again next season.
