Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson is lining up potential arrivals at Old Trafford should striker Wayne Rooney leave the club in the January transfer window.
The England international has not been shy about making his voice heard about his unrest and Manchester United and the 24 year old believes that a move to another club would be in the best interest of all parties.
Should Rooney leave Old Trafford, it is believed that the star will fetch a transfer fee close to £50 million, giving Ferguson plenty of money to spend on not only replacing the loss of Rooney, but also investing in some key areas which need improvement.
Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema is believed to be on the top of Ferguson’s list as a like for like replacement for Rooney. The United boss has been interested in the Frenchman for a number of seasons and with the number of strikers at Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho’s disposal it is thought that Ferguson could land his man at a reduced fee.
Another two players who are high on the Old Trafford Boss’ wish list are Shalke goalkeeper Manuel Neur and Lyon midfielder Yoann Gourcuff. With a number of aging players in their squad, United have chosen to act now in replacing the likes of Edwin Van Der Sar and Paul Scholes who are weighing up the possibility of retirement come the end of the season.
While there is no doubt that the loss of Rooney is one which will weaken United in the short term, the potential transfer fee which the England international could command may make it a good bit of business in the long run. With the large amounts of debt currently at the North West club, any extra revenue to improve key areas in the squad, could be just what’s needed to help put the United back on the top of the Premier League.
