Ferguson Won’t Miss Out On Frenchman A Second Time

The Daily Star reckons Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema will be heading to Old Trafford in the January transfer window. Sir Alex Ferguson is a long time admirer of the French striker and won’t miss the chance to sign him this time around according to the titty tabloid. United tried to bring Benzema in in the summer of 09 but were outmuscled by Madrid’s financial strength.

Benzema burst onto the football scene in the 07/08 season when he was made a regular starter up front for Lyon.  Only nineteen years old at the time he had a remarkable season. In fifty one games he scored thirty one goals that helped the club to win their first ever double. In all he scored forty three league goals for Lyon in one hundred and twelve games.

In July 09 he signed for Real Madrid. Since his move to the Bernabeu he’s struggled to hold down a regular place. Competition for places is fierce and he found himself behind the likes of Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain for a forward place.

It’s believed new Madrid boss Jose Mourinho is keen to offload Benzema and he could be available for around £12m, despite Madrid paying £28m for him. If Madrid decide to let him go in January then United will face stiff competition from the likes of Juventus and Lazio.

If United do attempt to sign him in January then I would expect they would be looking to offload someone as they already have a number of strikers.

One of Rooney, Berbatov, Owen, Macheda, Hernandez or Bebe would surely have to be flogged. Rooney won’t be going anywhere, I doubt Berbatov will either. Hernandez and Bebe are new signings so they won’t be sold. That leaves Owen or Macheda.

I wouldn’t expect Ferguson to let a talent like Macheda go, so perhaps Owen may be on his way out should Benzema be brought in. It’s either that or juggle an awful lot of strikers.
