Filip Benkovic could be the perfect partner for Harry Maguire

Leicester City’s transfer window has been dominated by speculation linking Harry Maguire with a move away from the King Power in recent weeks, but a report from the Leicester Mercury suggests that they are set to sign a player who would be perfect alongside the England hero next season.

According to the report, Leicester are closing in on a deal for Dinamo Zagreb’s Filip Benkovic as the Foxes are in talks with the Croatian outfit over a potential transfer.

With less than 48 hours to go before the deadline, time is running out for the club to complete a deal and, based on the evidence of the 21-year-old’s career so far, the club should do everything in their power to get a deal over the line.

Standing at a 6ft 4in, Benkovic (valued at £9.9 million by Transfermarkt) is a physical presence to be reckoned with, but he possesses both the composure and technical ability to ensure that he is productive in possession of the ball.

Like Maguire, Leicester’s target may look like an old-fashioned centre-back but his natural instinct to play out from the back and retain possession at every opportunity.

Perhaps one of the standout features of Benkovic’s career so far is his goal-scoring record which far exceeds the kind of return you would expect from a central defender: 2 goals from 5 appearances from the Croatia U21 side and 6 from 56 in the Croatian top-flight serves to illuminate the extent of his threat from set-pieces.

With Maguire by his side there is no doubt that the promising talent would be in a fantastic position to realise the full extent of his ball-playing potential, whilst he could also learn a thing or two from the richly experienced Jonny Evans.

Claude Puel would have a defensive pairing of true quality on his hands if he is able to welcome Benkovic to the club in the coming days, and with Evans also at his disposal he would have an ideal opportunity to experiment with a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 formation.
