Crystal Palace fans have been drowning their sorrows all season in the Transfer Tavern after the Eagles’ horrendous start to the Premier League campaign.
Roy Hodgson’s men suffered six straight defeats prior to their visit to Manchester United on Saturday, and that soon became seven courtesy of a 4-0 drubbing by Jose Mourinho’s men at Old Trafford.
Add in the fact that they have yet to score in the league this term, and our resident Palace fans have had nothing to cheer about this season, although there may be some potentially positive news to come if a report from Fotomac is anything to go by.
And that’s because they report that the London-based outfit will submit an improved bid for Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun in January, in a bid to solve their worsening striker crisis.
The 26-year-old moved to the Turkish champions back in 2014 and has since produced the goods in front of goal, netting 54 goals in 127 games for the club, and thus helping them to successive Super Lig crowns.
And he has started this season in fine form as well with four goals in nine games for Besiktas, and his excellent goal-scoring exploits interested several Premier League sides earlier this year, most notably Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham.
And although Palace reportedly submitted a bid for Tosun in the last knockings of the transfer window, it was deemed too late to accept, yet recent reports suggest that Hodgson’s men, who have seen star striker Christian Benteke ruled out for six weeks with injury, will go in for him again.
But whether the 26-year-old is the man to get Palace out of the mire in the second half of the season very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: If things weren’t bad enough for Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson, given that his side are bottom without a point or a goal in seven Premier League games, then he also has a striking crisis to contend with.
Both Christian Benteke and Connor Wickham are out with injury and look set for a spell on the sidelines, leaving little-known Freddie Ladapo, who only made his debut last weekend against Manchester United, as their only recognised striker.
So it’s not hugely surprising to see that they are reportedly looking to reignite their interest in Besiktas’ Cenk Tosun in January, a 26-year-old who has scored 54 goals in 127 games for the Turkish side, and helped them to back-to-back domestic titles.
But only time will tell whether Palace can wait until January to bring a striker in, or whether they will need to land a free agent to get them through the next few months.
