Firmino signed: Now Liverpool must seal agreement with £72m-rated star to challenge Man City next season

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were absolutely delighted by recent news regarding Roberto Firmino’s future at Anfield which emerged over the weekend.

Liverpool’s fluid front-three of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have stolen the plaudits this season with their devastating link-up play in the final-third. At the spearhead of the attack, Firmino has been the focal-point of Liverpool’s play, and the resident Reds propping up our bar have been full of admiration for the consistency and quality of his performances.

The Brazilian who has scored 27 goals and provided 16 assists from his 49 appearances so far this season was rewarded for his fine form this weekend as he put pen to paper on a new contract with the club. His previous deal which was due to expire in 2020 has been extended until 2023, so the Liverpool supporters will be desperately hoping the latest development will deter interest from outside the club this summer.

Liverpool’s agreement with Firmino is a promising sign for a club who recently waved goodbye to one of their key players, namely Philippe Coutinho, and if they wish to continue to enjoy success in the Champions League and challenge for the Premier League title next season they will also need to extend the contract of Mo Salah (valued at £72 million by Transfermarkt) during the summer.

Supporters and pundits have simply ran out of superlatives to describe Liverpool’s electric Egyptian on his return to the Premier League. With an astonishing record of 43 goals and 15 assists from 47 appearances to bring to the table, there’s no doubt that interest from Europe’s heavyweight clubs will be brewing ahead of the summer window.

If Liverpool wish to keep hold of their talisman and top-goalscorer they will need to make a huge statement of intent and prove their commitment to Salah by offering him a bumper new contract when the season reaches its conclusion, despite the fact he still has 4 years remaining on his current deal. If they are unable to convince Salah to remain at the club, interest from afar could prove too tempting for both player and club to resist.

The Coutinho transfer saga proved that ultimately every player has their price, but Liverpool could price out the competition by extending Salah’s current deal. It’s a deal they simply must conclude in order to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title next season, otherwise the Reds will drop off the pace once again.
