As if Manchester United’s attack wasn’t frightening enough, Sir Alex is already looking to bolster his options in the final third by keeping an eye on Ghanaian youngster Richmond Boakye .
The striker grabbed the attention of the top clubs around Europe from his performances on loan at Serie B outfit Sassuolo last season as he netted 12 goals in 34 games. Juventus then came calling in the summer and Boakye agreed a co-ownership deal with the reigning Italian champions and his current club Genoa.
He has certainly made a big impact since coming through the ranks at Genoa and he has really turned his exciting talent into some impressive performances at Sassuolo.
The Ghanaian is very much something different to what United already have on offer up front as he’s a striker with raw power and pace that can really bully and frighten some defences. With two good feet and the potential to score a variety of goals, Boakye looks like a player that could really become a star in a few years time.
Perhaps that’s why Sir Alex has sent scouts to watch Boakye as he see’s him spearheading the United attack in the future. However, first the United boss may have to shuffle his pack of attackers as the reds already boast the goalscoring talents of Rooney, Van Persie, Hernandez and Welbeck as well as promising youngsters Federico Macheda, Angelo Henriquez and Bebe.
United will probably need to think about a clearout before making a move for Boakye as competition is tough enough without adding another forward to the mix, but who will get the chop? Maybe Macheda and Bebe’s United careers will be coming to an end soon after failing to make an impact in the first team and for Javier ‘Chicherito’ Hernandez it could be a make or break season.
Hernandez has had a fantastic first couple of years at Old Trafford but there have been recent rumours that he could be moving on as it seems Van Persie, Welbeck and Rooney are all ahead in the pecking order. If the Mexican wants to extend his United stay he may have to have a very prolific season.
Sir Alex has certainly got some thinking to do if he wants to bring Boakye to the Premier League and he may also have to do some serious negotiating as well as Juventus won’t be giving up on the striker easily.
The lure of English football might be enough to tempt Boakye to leave Italy but I think Fergie might just wait until the end of the season before deciding whether gamble on the young Ghanaian at the expense of some of the other strikers at the club.
