Flashback: Jose Mourinho joins Man Utd

After the disappointment that had engulfed Man Utd following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, back in 2015, fans were looking for something different. David Moyes looked to be out of his depth at Old Trafford, whilst Louis van Gaal wasn’t able to bring success either, so at the end of the 2015/16 season – the Red Devils turned to one of the best of all time.

Jose Mourinho joined Man Utd on the 27th of May, and as you would expect, the reaction was very positive, to say the least. Though the Portuguese had only been sacked by Chelsea previously, he had been the most successful coach in Europe during the proceeding years, and best of all, he knew exactly what it took to win the Premier League. In many ways, he ticked all the boxes – and that’s why the reaction was so positive, as can be seen below.

Of course, with the benefit of hindsight, the excitement surrounding Mourinho’s arrival was only short-term, with the same old frustration soon coming back to haunt the boss.

After a successful first season in which Man Utd picked up the Europa League and the EFL Cup, the Red Devils’ fortunes took a downturn during the 2017/18 season. They eventually, somehow, finished 2nd, but they were a whopping 19 points behind Man City, and that was a sign of things to come.

A horrendous campaign in the 2018/19 season, which saw Man Utd drop out of the top-four and gave rise to many first team players enduring horrendous bouts of form, eventually forced Mourinho out of a job in December – with the once confident, happy and engaged manager looking like a shadow of his former self.

The feeling surrounding his arrival, then, at that point was merely a distant memory.

Were fans misguided in their delight at Mourinho joining? It’s hard to argue for that, as on paper, he looked like a perfect fit, and for a while, he was exactly that. However, as we’ve seen so many times before, his inability to ensure long-term success soon reared its ugly head, and often with Mourinho it’s very easy to get to the point of no return.

The difference between Man Utd under Jose and Man Utd under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is significant, and so it will be very interesting to see how the Norweigan does. Thus far, the reaction to his appointment has been very positive, but like with Mourinho, will fans turn on the club legend if he doesn’t provide results?

Only time will tell.
