In our latest instalment of the Flashback series, we take a look back at a certain moment and look at how things might have changed those initial reactions.
Back in the summer transfer window, it looked almost certain that Danny Rose would be heading for the exit door from Tottenham Hotspur. The player had been left out the club’s travelling squad for their tour of the Far East as he was allowed to find a new club ahead of a prospective move away from the club (via The Sun).
A move away didn’t materialise, and Spurs were left with the left-back, a decision they should probably be regretting right now. Indeed, pundits such as Charlie Nicholas has recently claimed he doesn’t want to be there, fans on Twitter were seemingly happy at his recent omission from the team in the Champions League and Football Insider have reported he’s unhappy behind the scenes.
So, it doesn’t look like a happy situation right now.
Furthermore, in England’s 2-1 defeat away to the Czech Republic, Rose endured a nightmare performance as the nation lost their first European Championship qualifier in 43 games (via BBC)
ITV’s pundit for the game Roy Keane was far from complimentary of the 29-year-old, blasting his performance.
He said: “Rose gave a performance tonight… my goodness. Someone’s got to get hold of that guy. He was, I thought, shocking, abysmal.”
“But I think he’ll be the same in another three or four years.” (Source: ITV via The Mirror)
Keane wasn’t wrong in his assessment of the Spurs defender, who endured a nightmare game against England’s Group A rivals.
During the 90 minutes, the 29-year-old won none of the two tackles he attempted and lost possession of the ball the joint-most times of any player on the pitch (via WhoScored).
Rose hasn’t had the best of times with Tottenham following his stay at the club. He’s given away the most fouls of any defender in the Tottenham team and, as per WhoScored, only one actual defender – Frédéric Guilbert – has given away more in the entire Premier League thus far. Against Watford recently, his performance was slated by some supporters online.
Frankly, given the current state of play, both Rose and the club should wish he left earlier this year.
