Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are starting to get anxious, the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid is just over a week away.
The Reds will travel to Kiev knowing they have knocked out Portuguese champions Porto, English champions Manchester City as well as Roma on their road to the final. Despite struggling in La Liga, Real Madrid have been on fire in Europe and will play in their third consecutive final. Jurgen Klopp will know it won’t be easy but will know anything is possible.
With transfer plans on hold until the conclusion of the final, the German can’t begin to strengthen his squad just yet. That hasn’t stopped the transfer rumours with Juventus keeper Gianluigi Buffon the latest player to be linked with a move to Anfield. While the Italian would be an excellent addition, Liverpool should also add a young keeper who can be tutored by the World Cup winner.
They should opt for Athletic Bilbao shot stopper – Kepa Arrizabalaga. The 23-year-old is valued at £18m by Transfermarkt and has made 29 appearances in La Liga this season. Once linked with Real Madrid, the Spaniard would be the perfect ‘keeper for Liverpool. With Buffon as his mentor, he would go from strength to strength.
Bilbao have a history of losing their best players to Europe’s heavyweights, and Kepa could be set to follow in the footsteps of Aymeric Laporte in moving to England. According to Squawka, the Spaniard has made significantly more saves per 90 minutes (3.08) than both Loris Karius (1.50) and Simon Mignolet (1.53). He is also comfortable off his line, catching 3.04 crosses on average.
Signing both Buffon and Kepa would be one of Liverpool’s best moves in years.
