Reports from Spain are indicating that Barcelona are seeking the signature of Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul. Is this just more meaningless paper talk? Or do Newcastle fans have a right to be fearful?
Newcastle fans were probably expecting this kind of rumour sooner or later, their sides fantastic season last year a major contribution to that. Dutch keeper Krul was certainly one of the highlight performers for the Geordies, only overshadowed in the media by the goalscoring prowess of Papiss Cisse. Now it seems the top clubs have been sniffing around the north east.
Many will immediately chalk this off as mere paper talk, but is it so completely out of the question that the Catalan giants are interested in signing the Dutch international? He has proven to be an exceptional player in between the sticks, playing every Premier League match last season, displaying leadership far beyond his tender age goalkeeping wise at 24.
Barcelona have for years now, relied on Victor Valdes in goal for them during their conquest of La Liga and Europe. While a keeper for one of the best teams in the world naturally, will not have to perform his duties as regular as the likes of Newcastle will, there has always been a layer of concern regarding his overall ability. He is prone to mistakes when called upon, his incredible records for Barcelona more because of their quality everywhere else, rather than on him. This evident by the fact he is behind both Casillas, and Reina, in the international pecking order for Spain, despite playing for a side wildly regarded as one of the best to ever exist.
With Tim Krul, Barcelona would acquire a player who has yet to even enter his peak as a goalkeeper, and has proven himself for a side that last year, was considered to struggle in the Premier League, but instead winded up chasing the prospect of a Champions League slot. Whether the Catalan side are truly interested or not, Newcastle fans will surely be checking the rumour stories more and more, as their stars continue to impress.
