The Man Utd defence has been a real problem area for the Red Devils in the last few years, with the unflappable likes of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic now long in the memory.
They’ve been replaced by several players that simply haven’t been up to par, and so for Jose Mourinho, bringing in a new defensive mainstay makes sense. He’s looking to do just that, according to the Mirror, with a move for Toby Alderweireld on the cards this summer.
However, with a huge £75 million transfer fee, a move for the 29-year-old doesn’t make financial sense, and so perhaps Mourinho should instead consider a move for Chelsea man Kurt Zouma, who has spent the season on loan at Stoke City.
Zouma, who is rated at £13.5 million by Transfer Markt, made his breakthrough at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho, and he quickly slotted into a defence that was filled with excellent talent. Alongside the likes of Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta, Zouma stood out as arguably the most talented of the bunch – with incredibly consistent and dominant performances at the back proving crucial to Chelsea’s success.
Despite his youth, Zouma did not look out of place amongst players that were several years his senior, and that’s a testament to his quality. Mourinho clearly rated him too, given how much action he saw during the Portuguese’s tenure at Stamford Bridge.
Stoke City have been relegated this season, but it’s tough to put the blame on Zouma, who was one of their better performers. Under Mourinho, he has a good chance of getting back to his best, and at just 23-years-old, he’d be able to stay in the defence long-term, which is what Man Utd need. He’s likely to be a rival of Man Utd in the first team next season at Chelsea if the Red Devils don’t make a move for him, and that could be costly for Jose.
